About this Event
Kappella Kyrie presents ....Among Women, a moving choral concert celebrating women's voices in music. The program will feature works by Ukrainian female composers alongside contemporary Canadian, American, and Australian composers, highlighting women as creators, poets and inspirations. At its heart will be music by Stefania Turkewich, Ukraine's first female composer, including reare movements from her 1919 Divine Liturgy, performed from newly engraved manuscript sources.
The concert will also include works by Iryna Aleksiychuk, Victoria Vita Poleva, Ola Gjeilo, Peter Togni and Arvo Pärt. Reflective and uplifting....Among Women will honour motherhood, remembrance, and resilience, and conclude with beloved secular selections including Billy Joel's She's Always a Woman.

ABOUT THE CHOIR
In the spring of 2010, Dr. Melanie Turgeon (Professor of Music and Choral Conductor at The King’s University in Edmonton, Alberta) and others decided to begin assembling Kappella Kyrie. The founders shared a conviction that the Edmonton community would benefit significantly from having a Chamber Choir primarily devoted to Slavic sacred music. The music of the Eastern Churches is rich, and Kappella Kyrie desires to share this treasured music with a broader public. However, this ensemble does not restrict itself to performing only this genre of music. They explore a variety of repertoire, with a consistent consciousness to uphold Slavic music.
In May 2025 at the Winspear Centre, the ensemble celebrated it's 15th Anniversary with a landmark concert featuring a large-scale commissioned work for a 120-voice mass choir and 35-piece orchestra , and soloists from both local and international communities, including a world premiere and two North American premieres.
On May 30, 2024, the choir presented a CD release concert in celebration of their first recording Alleluia.
Kappella Kyrie joined with Shumayela, an Edmonton based choir for treble and changing voices, to perform “Praise: An Evening of Psalm Texts" on May 13, 2023.
On November 26, 2022 Kappella Kyrie performed "Seen the True Light" with Ukrainian baritone, Yurii Hryhorash.
Kappella Kyrie was deeply honoured to partner once again with Richard Eaton Singers on June 19, 2022 for a special fundraising concert at Edmonton’s Winspear Centre, that raised $22,000 for those who have recently moved to Edmonton and area, as they flee the war in Ukraine.
February 29, 2020 - Kappella Kyrie performed its 10th anniversary concert, “A Journey Through Lent” with The King’s University Chamber Choir featuring Dr. Joachim Segger (piano) and Dr. Charles Stolte (saxophone) both from the King’s Music Faculty.
June 2019 - Canadian premier of Artem Vedel' choral concerto "I Entreated Thy Favour" with soloists and Baroque orchestra.
2019 Choral Canada National Competition - placed 1st in the Pan-Cultural Traditions Category.
