If you or your family have been impacted by the Wichita Police Department and would like to speak about your experiences, there will be space for you to share your story and be heard. This protest is being held in acknowledgment of the anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, a moment that forced the country to confront police violence and the devastating impact it has had on families and communities.
There are so many concerns being voiced throughout Wichita right now regarding the Wichita Police Department and policing in our city. This protest is intended to create space for all of those voices. People may come with very different experiences, frustrations, perspectives, and reasons for attending, but there is power in solidarity. At the end of the day, we all want the same thing: a safer Wichita and a public safety system that serves and protects everyone in the community.
Many community members would rather see more public investment in solutions proven to strengthen communities and reduce harm. There are countless ways we can invest in strengthening our communities instead of endlessly increasing policing budgets and surveillance while expecting different results. This are just a few examples.
