(Bio) Amber “Flutienastiness” Underwood is a dynamic flutist, educator, and creative force redefining what it means to be a modern instrumentalist. Based in Kansas City—a UNESCO Creative City of Music—she blends jazz, soul, R&B, gospel, and contemporary influences into a bold, signature sound that is both expressive and unapologetically her own.
Known on stage as Flutienastiness, Amber delivers a commanding presence that pushes the flute to the forefront—transforming it from a supporting voice into a lead instrument with power, edge, and soul. As the bandleader of Flutienastiness and the SoulPatrol, she curates high-energy, emotionally rich performances that connect deeply with audiences while celebrating the legacy and evolution of Black American music.
A seasoned performer, Amber has graced stages locally and internationally, earning recognition including Top 25 Jazz Album in Kansas City for her debut project This Is Me, along with multiple honors for her contributions to the arts. Her artistry reflects not only technical excellence, but lived experience—telling stories of resilience, identity, and freedom through sound.
Beyond the stage, Amber is a passionate educator and arts leader with over 15 years of experience building and leading music programs. She currently serves as an applied flute professor at Kansas City Kansas Community College and is the founder of her Education & Arts Consulting practice, partnering with schools and organizations to design impactful, sustainable arts programs.
At the core of her work is a clear mission: to create space, inspire authenticity, and remind others that there is power in owning your voice—and your lane.
