About this Event
We live in a society where facts take a back seat to sizzle, so we have to choose to stay informed. Spend an evening with Mary Fontana with the facts on global migration and how we deal with it.
Strangers in the Province of Joy
This is the story of America writ small—a nation founded by immigrants and its shifting, oft-contradictory attitudes toward them. Since 1978, El Paso’s Annunciation House has welcomed over half a million people: migrants and refugees, doing what humans have always done to find sustenance and safety, and volunteers seeking meaning and purpose. Through this chronicle of their individual journeys, Mary Fontana exposes the forces driving global migration and challenges readers to confront the borders in their own hearts.
Mary Fontana is an award-winning writer and researcher who has worked with migrant hospitality efforts at the US-Mexico border for over twenty years. Her first book, Strangers in the Province of Joy: Practicing Radical Hospitality on the US-Mexico Border, is forthcoming in May 2026 from Orbis Books. She has written about border issues for America, BorderLore, and Consequence, and was a finalist for the 2025 Richard J. Margolis Award for social justice journalism. She lives in Seattle.
