Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and Tony Award-winning actor John Gallagher Jr. comes home for a special night at Elkton Music Hall - and this one’s personal. John was the very first artist to ever perform at our grand opening night, and now he’s back where it all began, just a few miles from where he grew up in Delaware. You may know him from The Newsroom, Short Term 12, 10 Cloverfield Lane, or Hush, or from his Tony-winning turn in Spring Awakening, his starring role in American Idiot, and most recently Swept Away. But on this stage, it’s John the songwriter -armed with his Gibson J-45 and that red lightning-bolt strap - who takes the spotlight.
Born into a family of folk musicians, John wrote his first song at age five and has since moved through roots rock, pop-punk, and into what he lovingly calls “emo folk rock.” Inspired by Prine, Costello, Springsteen, Westerberg, and Schlesinger, his music is raw, witty, and deeply heartfelt—full of stories that feel lived-in and true.
From Rockwood Music Hall on the Lower East Side to stages across the country, John’s songs have earned comparisons to The Byrds’ jangle and Tom Petty’s bar-band soul. Seeing him bring that energy back where EMH’s story first began - feels like a full-circle moment you won’t want to miss.
Both Hannah Winkler and JD Webb will have groups for their opening slots!
