About this Event
Instituto Cervantes London is collaborating with the Centre for Catalan Studies at Queen Mary University on the annual Joanot Martorell Conference, which will be led by Emeritus Professor Jacqueline Hurtley.
Her presentation, entitled 'Translation or transcreation? English-language authors, Catalan translators and publishers, 1920-1938', will focus on a selection of literary texts in English by 19th- and 20th-century authors. It will refer to the fiction of George Eliot, Joseph Conrad and Virginia Woolf before focusing on translations and/or transcreation products into Catalan by journalists and writers, such as Josep Carner, C.A. Jordana and Josep M. Millàs-Raurell, and marketed by cultural entrepreneurs such as Carles Soldevila and Josep Janés i Olivé, both writers and sometimes journalists, during a volatile 20-year period in Catalonia. Finally, attention will be paid to the contexts of translation and publication with a view to interpreting the logic behind certain transformations.
