J.M.W TURNER: Painting Skies
RECORDING ONLY: Available to watch immediately once booked until the 2nd Feb 2025 11:59pm GMT
Taught by Frances Stanfield
Our classes are always pay what you can!
Join Frances' online watercolour class which focusses on Turner's paintings of skies. A vast and beautiful subject, we will learn from the master himself by making copies of his clouds, sunsets, sunrises, moonscapes and rainbows covered in wind, rain, fog and transferring these skills to our own works.
Watercolour is the perfect medium to capture the changing effects of weather - vast spaces of hazy, billowing and ambiguous shapes. We will have a lot of fun trying recreating Turner's very physical and experimental processes.
There is so much to learn from just this one theme!
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced painter, this class will provide you with an abundance of ideas and techniques including how to manipulate your brushwork, layer colours, how to lay down various washes, splattering, stopping out, all with guidance from tutor and artist Frances Stanfield.
Frances will be teaching from her studio in London.
Suggested Materials:
(If you don't have all of the materials below we still recommend you join us with whatever you have, you may wish to buy some materials after watching the class and you can always paint along again with the recording access.)
- Any size paper that can hold water and paint, such as watercolour paper.
Top Tip: Lining paper (for walls) from a DIY shop is the closest we can get to the texture of Turner's paper today and a lot cheaper than watercolour paper! Just bare in mind this lining paper changes colour when exposed to light. Precut enough paper from the roll before the class so that you can just keep painting!
- A pencil
- Ideally watercolours. If you don't have any watercolours, you could also join the class with acrylic or gouache.
- Brushes - a range of brushes would be ideal but at minimum one round brush approximately 0.5cm will do and a larger 1 inch flat brush ( even a cheap decorating brush will do)
- A pot/glass of water to clean your brush
- A rag (a dish cloth or bit of an old t-shirt)or a sponge and/or tissue/kitchen roll
- Something to mix your paints on, your watercolours may come with a pan or you can use a plate/tile or you can use a plate/tile or if you're using acrylic paints just some cardboard.
Optional:
- White gouache (If you have white gesso or white acrylic, you can use those instead)
- Masking fluid (or a white wax crayon if you can't get this)
This class is suitable for all levels

ARE YOU TRYING TO BOOK VIA THE EVENTBRITE PHONE APP?!
We have been in touch with Eventbrite, and they have informed us that you cannot book tickets to online events in their app. It's very frustrating and we have been assured they are working on a solution. In the meantime, we recommend that you delete the phone app (especially if you’re a regular!) or book tickets to our events outside of the iOS app - either via a web browser or a desktop.
And that's it!
We're really looking forward to you joining us.
Love,
LDG
