Fifty Years of Wildlife Care: Jirrahlinga Marks Milestone with Celebration Weekend.
This October, one of Central Victoria’s most remarkable wildlife stories turns 50.
Jirrahlinga Dingo Conservation & Wildlife Education Centre, the not-for-profit sanctuary that has rescued hundreds of native animals and touched many human lives, is marking its golden anniversary with a weekend of celebration, and everyone’s invited.
Saturday 11 October- Fundraising Dinner, Castlemaine Town Hall
A wild night out for a wild cause.
This evening of good food, lively company, trivia, auctions and animal-themed fun will transform Castlemaine Town Hall into the region’s wildest dining room. Every ticket sold helps feed, shelter and care for Jirrahlinga’s 300+ animals, from koalas and wombats to dingoes and owls.
Sunday 12 October – Community Fair, Jirrahlinga Sanctuary, Chewton
Families can follow paw print signs to the sanctuary for a day of live music, market stalls, kids’ activities and wildlife encounters. Visitors will meet Jirrahlinga’s residents up close - koalas, kangaroos, reptiles and the famous dingoes - while enjoying a relaxed festival atmosphere.
A Story Worth Telling
‘Jirrahlinga began as a refuge for injured animals after the Ash Wednesday bushfires,’ said founder Tehree Gordon OAM. ‘Fifty years later, we are still a place of refuge - for wildlife and for people who find healing in their company. This is a celebration for everyone who cares about our remarkable native wildlife.’
Why It Matters
The anniversary weekend also raises vital funds to cover the daily cost of animal care. With no ongoing government funding, Jirrahlinga relies on community support to keep its gates open and its animals safe.
