About this Event
Jim Kweskin is the founder of the legendary 1960s Jim Kweskin Jug Band with Fritz Richmond, Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur, Mel Lyman and Bruno Wolfe. They transformed the sounds of pre-World War II rural music into a springboard for their good-humored performances.
These days Jim is best known as a singer and bandleader; he is also widely recognized for creating one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Mississippi John Hurt and Pink Anderson to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. His shows radiate charm, humor, sophistication and talent with selections ranging from Benny Goodman to Johnny Mercer, to Fats Waller to Somethin’ Smith and the Redheads. Kweskin is recognized as one of the best interpreters of the great American songbook.
The evening will open with a short set from East Bay multi-instrumentalist, musical scholar and cajun/blues interpreter Suzy Thompson. Suzy’s bonafides are too long to list. Highlights include channeling of the music of Memphis Minnie and Bessie Smith, being a founding member of Any Old Time String Band, apprenticing with cajun master musician Dewy Balfa and founding the Berkely Old Time Music Convention
