ELLINGTON SWEET 16 FESTIVAL: SIXTEEN YEARS OF SWEET JAZZ20th February – 2nd March 2025
Jessica Carlton’s new album ‘Ekphrasis’ features six original compositions composed as part of her postgraduate research project on musical ekphrasis. Musical ekphrasis, in short, refers to a musical transformation of a work of visual art or poetry.
“This project was born out of a lifelong curiosity about visual art and poetry, and a desire to combine my interests and find new ways to create music with works that inspire me.”
The six compositions are based on visual artworks by Bori Benko, Eveline Kotai, and Judy Chicago; and poems by Emily Dickinson, Aja Monet, and Sonia Sanchez. The album features Perth-based musicians Jessica Carlton, Jamie Oehlers, Allira Wilson, Harry Mitchell, Djuna Lee, and Pete Evans.
Join Jessica Carlton along with Jamie Oehlers on tenor saxophone, Holli Scott on vocals, Harry Mitchell on piano, Djuna Lee on double bass, and Pete Evans on drums at the official launch of the album. All of the music on the album will be performed, as well as some brand new compositions!
The album is available digitally on band camp and streaming, and physical copies will be launched and available for purchase on the night.
