The Jose Zwerink Quartet consists of a group of top musicians from Groningen who have been giving
an important boost to jazz life in and around the city of Groningen for decades.
These old hands in the trade pass on their experience and knowledge to keep jazz alive in all its
facets. A band of
these musicians/teachers has been formed especially for the SMEDERIJ around singer
Jose Zwerink, pianist Diederik Idema ,bassist Hans Lass and drummer Sebastian Demydczuk. They bring a program of jazz standards
from the American and Brazilian songbooks. The audience can quickly
move into the atmosphere of an authentic jazz club where creative musicians are inspired to
get the best out of themselves.
Jose Zwerink
José Zwerink studied singing at the conservatory in Groningen. She toured for 12 years with the musical cabaret group "Vrouw Holland". As a singer with a great love for jazz and Latin, she worked with the Prins Claus Bigband Groningen, Horace Silver Project, Brazilian Love Affair and Dutch Oven. Nowadays, José can be heard regularly with her regular pianist Diederik Idema with small, changing line-ups. In addition to her career as a singer, José is a singing teacher and regularly gives workshops.
Diederik Idema, has been the session leader of the weekly Smederij jazz sessions for decades. Diederik once studied Social Geography, but like so many others with music in their blood, it eventually became the Prins Claus Conservatory. Teaches at the municipal music school (Vrijdag) Groningen.

Hans Lass studied Double Bass Jazz Music at the Conservatory of Groningen and in The Hague. His bass teachers were Koos Wiltenburg, Jan Voogd and Hein van de Geijn
During his studies Hans supervised numerous workshops, masterclasses and presentations with James Taylor, Lee Konitz, Ack van Rooyen, John Scofield, Dieter Glawischnik, Jasper van't Hof, Philip Catherine, Mike Stern, Edwin Rutten, Jenne Meinema, Herb Geller, Ronnie Cuber, Leonardo Amuedo, Henk Meutgeert.....
Drummer Sebastian Demydczuk
started with piano and accordeon, but chose for the drums at the age of thirteen. After finishing his classical training in Poland, he moved to Groningen, and studied jazz drums. After his graduation, he studied in New York. His first giant steps as a drummer were made in the world famous polish jazz band “Simple Acoustic Trio”. Moving to the Netherlands and joining several dutch jazz groups is Sebastian nowadays succesful as a jazz-world music drummer performing internationally with the Dutch-Turkish group Barana. Sebastian has his own recording studio and besides being a drummer and sound engineer, he is also busy as a producer.
