About Lisa Sokolov
Lisa Sokolov is a frontline New York vocalist, improviser and composer and along-time professor at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Experimental Theater Wing. Her recordingsas leader:angel Rodeo, Lazy Afternoon, Presence and A Quiet Thing, have all received many Best CD of the Year citations including 5 stars “Masterpiece” and Best CD of the Year and Best CDs of the Decade list in Downbeat Magazine. She is a longtime collaborator with bassist William Parker and can be heard on many of his recordings as well including Afternoon Poem, Stan’s Hat... , Song Cycle, Voices Fall from the Sky. She has been head internationally at the Montreaux Jazz, Havanna International Jazz Festival, Spoleto Festival, Stimmen Festival, Salzburg Festival of Jazz, Vision Festival, Baltos Scandal and more. Sokolov’s fascination with the power of the human voice has led her to be recognized internationally for her pioneering voice work in the field of Music Therapy. This fascination has led her into the study of Cantorial Singing and work as a lay Cantor. It is this shared understanding of music as language and ritual that connects her to Hans Young BInter, the pianist who will be joining her in Vespers.
