About this Event
And now, let's welcome our artist this month, Vocalist Chris Watson with the Lori Mechem Trio sharing a special program on The Life and Music of Cole Porter, the Nashville Jazz Workshop. NJW was founded in 1998 as the Nashville Jazz Institute by Lori Mechem and Roger Spencer, and opened with a handful of students. The program was based on a workshop model developed by Mechem and Spencer growing out of their dissatisfaction with traditional academic jazz education. The workshop model is based on a journeyman/apprentice approach.
The mission of the Nashville Jazz Workshop is to enrich people’s lives and build community through world class jazz education and performances.
Accomplishing their mission through:
-A workshop environment where jazz professionals pass on their knowledge & experience in a journeyman/apprentice situation
-Classes for players & non-players
-Performances to promote community appreciation of jazz
"Cole Porter was an American composer and songwriter known for his witty, sophisticated lyrics and enduring contributions to Broadway and Hollywood. Born into wealth in Indiana, he chose music over law, despite his family's wishes. Classically trained, he struggled early in his career but rose to prominence in the 1920s and became a leading Broadway songwriter by the 1930s. Unlike many of his peers, Porter wrote both the music and lyrics for his songs, crafting timeless hits that defined an era of musical theatre.
A severe horseback riding accident left Porter in constant pain, but he continued composing. Though his early 1940s shows lacked the enduring success of his earlier works, he made a triumphant return with Kiss Me, Kate, which won the first Tony Award for Best Musical. His other notable musicals include Anything Goes, Can-Can, and Silk Stockings, while his hit songs—such as Night and Day, I've Got You Under My Skin, and You're the Top—remain standards. He also composed for Hollywood films, leaving a lasting legacy in both theatre and cinema."
