2026 Outstanding Alumna of the Year (Carol Tateishi)
Long-time educator, Carol Tateishi ’64, MA ’90 taught English for 20 years in local schools before serving another 20 years as Director of UC Berkeley’s Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP), where she focused on educational reform and teacher leadership. During her tenure, she helped design the California Department of Education’s first statewide writing assessment and, nationally, in collaboration with NASA, coordinated the development of NASA’s first curriculum materials integrating literacy and science instruction. With a strong interest in youth programming, she started BAWP’s Young Writers Summer Camps, which continue to serve students throughout the Bay Area. After retiring in 2009, she continued this work internationally by establishing and directing youth literacy camps in Seoul, Singapore and Shenzhen, China. Carol served on the JAWAUCB board, including a term as board chair.
Keynote: Reflecting on our Past to Move us Forward (Beckie Uta Masaki)
Beckie Uta Masaki ‘80 is a sansei, born and raised in Sacramento. She attended UC Berkeley as an undergraduate and MSW, then continuing to live and work in the Berkeley area ever since. Over 40 years, Beckie has provided multilingual, multicultural services, prevention, and policy to domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking survivors and their children/ youth/ families/ communities. She was Co-Founder and Executive Director of SF Asian Women’s Shelter, among the first shelters addressing language and cultural needs of Asian survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. She co-founded and staffed API Institute on Gender-Based Violence. Beckie is currently Co-Leader of California Gathering Strength Collective, Mending the Arc in Resonance Network, and current board member in JAWAUCB. Beckie strives to create her best contributions to race + gender justice through an interconnected network of intergenerational, diverse folks in a new era of shared leadership + shared power
