About the Album

For one night only in June 2019, Broadway legend Sondheim joined 3x Tony Award winner Brown on stage at The Town Hall in New York City. They celebrated each other’s songs with the help of stage luminaries Katrina Lenk, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Rob McClure, Shoshana Bean, Joshua Henry, and an orchestra conducted by Georgia Stitt. This joyous event, a SubCulture benefit for Brady: United Against Gun Violence, was the talk of the town.

“Most people don’t get to say thank you to the artists who truly change their lives, but on that one night in 2019 I reached out to Stephen Sondheim, the man who gave me so much, and gave him the only gift I really knew how to give: the chance to make music,” said Brown. “Whatever else I accomplish in this life, I’m holding on to that.”

Jason Robert Brown and Stephen Sondheim: Live in Concert was produced by Jeffrey Lesser and Brown and co-produced by 3x GRAMMY Award® winner Sean Patrick Flahaven, Chief Theatricals Executive for Concord. The album was recorded by Jon Weston, mixed and edited by Lesser and mastered by Oscar Zambrano.

“It’s no exaggeration to say that this was a landmark concert at the time, and has only become more so since,” said Flahaven. “It was a magical night of colossal talents coming together, and the album captures those performances as well as Steve and Jason’s wonderful conversations, both verbal and musical.”

The concert was directed by Daisy Prince and executive produced by Marc Kaplan. Jeff Markowitz was concert production manager, and Elie Landau was general manager.

About the Artists

Jason Robert Brown is the ultimate multi-hyphenate – an equally skilled composer, lyricist, conductor, arranger, orchestrator, director and performer – best known for his dazzling scores to several of the most renowned musicals of our time, including the generation-defining The Last Five Years, his debut song cycle Songs for a New World, and the seminal Parade, winner of the 1999 Tony Award for Best Score and the 2023 Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.

This year has seen the premieres of two new JRB musicals: The Connector, created with Jonathan Marc Sherman and Daisy Prince, which completed a triumphant run at New York’s MCC Theater; and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, written with Taylor Mac based on John Berendt’s book and directed by Rob Ashford, which opened at at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in June and will make its Broadway debut in 2025.

These musicals add to a body of work that includes Parade, which garnered Jason the Tony Award for Best Original Score; and The Bridges of Madison County, for which Jason received two Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Orchestrations. His other musicals include Honeymoon in Vegas, 13 (which became a Netflix film in 2022), and Mr. Saturday Night starring Billy Crystal. Richard LaGravenese’s film of The Last Five Years was released in 2015. Parade has been the subject of two major revivals: the first, directed by Rob Ashford, at London’s Donmar Warehouse and then at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles; and the second, Michael Arden’s acclaimed Tony Award-winning Best Revival of a Musical, starring Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond.

As a soloist or with his band, Brown has performed concerts around the world. For six years, his ongoing monthly performances at New York’s SubCulture featured many of the music and theatre world’s most extraordinary performers. His newest collection Coming From Inside the House, featuring Ariana Grande and Shoshana Bean, commemorates the final SubCulture concert, recorded remotely during the pandemic. His previous albums, How We React and How We Recover and Wearing Someone Else’s Clothes, are available from Ghostlight Records. He has also contributed music to the hit Nickelodeon television series “The Wonder Pets” and “Sesame Street.” He has taught at the USC School of Dramatic Arts, Harvard University, Princeton University and Emerson College.

Brown is the winner of the 2018 Louis Auchincloss Prize, the 2002 Kleban Award for Outstanding Lyrics and the 1996 Gilman & Gonzalez-Falla Foundation Award for Musical Theatre. His songs have been performed and recorded by Ariana Grande, Jennifer Nettles, Brandi Carlile, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Billy Porter, Betty Buckley, Renée Fleming, Jon Hendricks and many others.
