About this Event

Join us for our first talk in the series The Floating World: People and Landscapes in Edo with Dr Ellis Tinios on the topic Japanese Ukiyo-e Prints: art for the masses talk introduced by Dr Erica Baffelli.

The lecture will provide an introduction to the colour woodblock prints produced in astonishing numbers in Japan in the 18th and 19th centuries. They depicted kabuki actors, women dressed in the latest fashions, heroes past and present; and landscapes. Each genre will be explored as will the production, distribution and use of these extraordinary works of art.

Dr Ellis Tinios

Trained in the USA and the UK. Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in East Asian History in the School of History, University of Leeds (1978-2002). Since 2002 has participated in research projects in the UK and Japan, and taught courses on print culture in early modern Japan in Japan and the USA.. Current research interests: the illustrated printed books in early modern Japan with particular emphasis on painting and calligraphy manuals, and Hokusai’s later books. Publications include Japanese Prints: Ukiyo-e in Edo, 1700-1900 (British Museum Press), Understanding Japanese Woodblock Printed Books with Suzuki Jun (Brill).

Erica Baffelli

Erica Baffelli is Professor of Japanese Studies at The University of Manchester (UK). She is interested in religion in contemporary Japan, with a focus on groups founded from the 1970s onwards. Her research projects and publication focus on religion in contemporary Japan; religion and media; new and minority religions; religion, gender and violence; and Buddhism and emotions. She currently PI on a Leverhulme Research Project on "Fear and Belonging in Minority Buddhist Communities" (2023-2027).
