About this Event
With your ticket, you can enjoy any hot drink from the café menu while you paint - the perfect companion for a slow, creative afternoon.
We’re Floating Art, an independent arts business, and for over seven years we’ve been helping people reconnect with creativity through relaxed, welcoming workshops inspired by traditional Japanese painting.
In this session, you’ll be introduced to Nihonga (日本画), a traditional Japanese painting style that celebrates nature & seasonality. Using bamboo brushes, sumi ink, Japanese mineral colours, gold leaf and rice paper, you’ll learn the foundations of the practice while creating a piece that feels completely your own.
The workshop begins with a live demonstration, where you’ll be introduced to the materials, techniques and ideas behind traditional Japanese painting. after that, you'll settle in, you’ll begin creating your own piece with guidance throughout the session. Inspired by the changing seasons - an important part of Japanese culture - each workshop explores carefully chosen seasonal themes and references drawn from both classic and contemporary Japanese artists.
Most people who join us haven’t painted in years — many are complete beginners. Whether it’s your first time picking up a brush or you already have some creative experience, you’ll be feel perfectly at home with us.
By the end of the class, you’ll leave with your finished artwork, new creative skills and that calm, satisfying feeling that comes from spending a few hours completely absorbed in making something by hand.
Make a day of it.
