James Dorman’s Sonic Art Collective. After wowing audiences with his Luna Art Ensemble’s performance at Bristol Cathedral in 2021, James Dorman returns with his Sonic Art Collective. Using a distinctive sound palette this ensemble creates music that moves from the intensely angular to deeply meditative.Piano, cello, vibraphone, saxophone, guitar are combined with ambient electronica to create a rich and compelling soundscape. Borrowing from the composition techniques of Music Concret, shimmering ethereal sounds are punctuated with angular melodic fragments, bursts of dense harmony are followed by sudden changes in dynamics and looped tones morph into faint shards of sound.
Influenced by Messian, Alvo Noto, Richter, Birtwistle, Stockhausen and Lemon Jelly, James Dorman’s Sonic Art Collective create music that is well crafted and intelligently arranged. An engaging collage of modern sound, the music is accessible due to being both exciting and profoundly emotional.
