About this Event

Weaving Stories of Strength Workshop 3: Yarning, Making & Moving
Guided by Aboriginal artist Karen Smart.

Stories in motion. Threads of connection.

Experience the power of yarning – a traditional conversational practice that fosters connection and shared understanding. Guided by Aboriginal artist Karen Smart, we will gather in a circle to share stories, create yarn-based pieces, and explore gentle movement as a way of embodying resilience and community.

What to Expect

  • Yarning circle: Share thoughts or stories - just a word or gesture is enough.
  • Create fabric tassels using wrapping, knotting, stitching, or embellishing techniques to embed your story.
  • Engage in meaningful dialogue while making, honouring cultural storytelling traditions.
  • Explore circle-based movement practices symbolising flow and unity.
  • Optional sound recording of words or sounds for the final soundscape.

Details:

  • This workshop will be held in the Learning Centre at the Museum at Inveresk, 2 Invermay Road, Launceston.

IWD 2026: Weaving Stories of Strength

Threads of resilience, sharing voices of transformation.

QVMAG and the City of Launceston, in collaboration with Interweave Arts, invite you to Weaving Stories of Strength - an arts workshop series in celebration of International Women’s Day 2026.

The free arts workshop series brings the 2026 IWD themes to life through seven creative workshops, culminating in a symbolic wearable sculpture to be revealed at a special morning tea event.

Through art therapy, textile design, movement, and sound, the project invites women and gender-diverse individuals to reclaim narratives, explore embodiment, and create a powerful symbol of collective strength.
