Abstract: Masonry assets—including bridges, viaducts, and tunnels—constitute a vital segment of UK’s critical infrastructure. Much of this stock is aging and exhibiting significant signs of structural deterioration. The combination of environmental weathering, escalating load intensities, and the increased frequency of climate-driven flood events has introduced profound uncertainty regarding long-term performance. Furthermore, many of these structures hold substantial heritage and cultural value; their failure would incur significant socio-economic costs. This presentation explores state-of-the-art developments in the inspection of our existing masonry structures, highlighting novel diagnostic methods driven by machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Speaker Bio: Professor Vasilis Sarhosis holds the Chair in Resilient Structures and Infrastructure at the University of Leeds and is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. His research directly addresses the challenge of ageing infrastructure, focusing on quantifying degradation and predicting the long-term behaviour of masonry structures. Today, he will unveil his vision for the future of inspecting masonry structures.
