About this Event
Sited at a former graveyard, on busy Pentonville Road, it’s easy to miss the small but fascinating urban park commemorating the ground-breaking clown -Joey Grimaldi (1778-1837). Islington Guide – Philip Nelkon, in partnership with Islington Council will lead a light walk around the park on Friday 27 September 2024.
There are inherent difficulties surrounding the management of urban parks and we’ll talk about those whilst appreciating the many attractive trees and shrubs. You’ll also get to see the grave of Joey Grimaldi and we’ll discuss his life and those of a couple of other famous people who are buried there – Charles Dibdin, the 18th century musician and Henry Penton who was responsible for the development one of the first estates of houses in nearby Pentonville.
We’ll also find out what a Coade stone is and why so few people have been buried in Central London for the past 150 years, plus there’s an interactive art installation described by the creator as ‘a joyous interlude’ that you can operate yourself .
The walk will commence from the seating area next to the Cumming Street Entrance to Joseph Grimaldi Park at 11am and will take approximately one hour.
