Invisible Rivers – Maria GajrajMarking the debut of the Invisible Rivers concert series, this performance features organist Maria Gajraj and composer George Rahi weaving together new poetics of the pipe organ. Through the uniting of classical and contemporary approaches, the concert harnesses the immense organ of Pacific Spirit United Church to reveal fresh expressive and imaginative potentials of the instrument.
Montreal-based organist Maria Gajraj performs a radiant program that moves fluidly between eras and atmospheres, featuring the contemplative minimalism of Arvo Pärt and her own arrangement of Hania Rani’s evocative piano works, among others.
Opening the evening, George Rahi presents pieces from his acclaimed project Music for the Augmented Pipe Organ, which “transforms the world’s oldest mechanical synthesizer into a jarringly futuristic device … making the organ feel alive with possibility.” (The Wire: Adventures in Sound and Music)
With Invisible Rivers, the organ emerges not as a monument frozen in time, but as a dynamic archive in which centuries of musical, technological, and symbolic currents converge and unfold.
