Introduction to Houseplants is a beginner-friendly lecture which starts by explaining what classifies as a plant, an overview history of houseplants, and then dives into a comprehensive understanding of how to grow plants indoors. Topics covered will include light, water, humidity, substrates & nutrients.
Whether you’re new to plants or a master gardener, all are welcome to come learn & asking questions is encouraged!
Free with Gardens admission or membership. No pre-registration required. Held in our air-conditioned Garden Room.

About the Speaker: Brett Cypress is a Botanist, Horticulturist & is the owner of a local plant business, Cypress Grove Exotics, which specializes in Mounted Plant Plaques & Terrariums. Brett’s passion for sharing his knowledge of plants has led him to teach lectures & workshops on various plant subjects around the world, in collaboration with many institutions such as Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden & China Three Gorges University.
He has been Head Grower for a Greenhouse in Central Florida & was President of an Orchid Society in South Florida. He is also an experienced plant breeder, creating brand-new Philodendron hybrids such as ‘Ruckus’ & ‘Trouble Tonight’. Brett is excited to be bringing his expertise to Sunken Gardens & the St. Petersburg area at large!
