This webinar provides an exploration of FASD diagnostic terms and how to identify the causes and long term effects of FASD
About this Event

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the leading known preventable neurodevelopmental disorder and is only caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. Studies have suggested that the FASD prevalence could be over 3%.

This could mean that statistically there could be over 2 million people with FASD in the UK, though the vast majority will be undiagnosed.

Instead, they may have received diagnoses like ADHD, ODD, autism, attachment disorder or mental health issues including personality disorder. Behavior may be viewed as anti-social rather than as a result of their brain damage.

In children and young people higher risk groups are likely to be those who are looked after, adopted or in receipt of mental health support.

Studies suggest that without the correct support an individual is more likely to have a range of issues including exploitation, mental health problems, trouble with the police, homelessness, difficulty with social relationships and employment. The criminal justice system is a high-risk group as people with FASD are 19 times more likely to get into trouble. However, with diagnosis and appropriate support people with FASD can lead happy lives.
