This workshop introduces participants to embroidery as a contemporary, expressive art form rather than a representational or decorative craft. Through guided exercises and open-ended exploration, participants will use stitch, color, and texture to create abstract embroidered compositions. The focus is on mark-making, layering, and intuitive decision-making, allowing participants to engage with embroidery as drawing with thread.
Learning Objectives:
-Learn basic embroidery stitches and techniques
-Explore abstraction through line, texture, and repetition
-Build confidence in using fiber as a mark-making tool
-Encourage experimentation and personal expression
Materials provided. Participants will receive and keep an embroidery hoop and needle, included in the class cost. This class is suitable for ages 13+.
This workshop is led by Everson Teaching Artist Catherine Spencer.
