Join this fun and inspiring course for just a session, a handful or all 6 weeks. We will be exploring a new embroidery technique each week, from the whitework and drawn threadwork of the Regency to the blackwork of the Tudors, we will discover Sashiko from Japan and Pepenado from Mexico as well as the best stitches to add lettering to your clothes.
9.30 - 11.30am Friday mornings from 1st May to 5th June at beautiful Vallis Farm, near Frome; all materials and tools, tea, coffee and biscuits included.
‍Friday 19th June : REGENCY WHITEWORK
Elegant and dainty (much to the dismay of many an Austen heroine), nowadays the classic embroidery techniques beloved by the Georgians are often modernised with colour and creative license to bring personality to textiles of all sorts
Friday 26th June: LETTERING
There are numerous options for sewing letters, and they depend on many things - we will consider them all before having a go at a few of the most useful techniques for you to carry on at home.
Friday 3rd July: SASHIKO
The stunning Japanese craft of building up surprisingly complex patterns from the humble running stitch
Friday 10th July: BLACKWORK
A fun but fiddly embroidery technique that has been traced as far back as c13 Egypt, made famous in the UK by Holbeins the Elder and Younger due to their incredibly intricate portraits of Tudor royals and aristocrats. Neat, occasionally double-sided and often incredibly intricate, traditionally worked in black silk on linen.
Friday 17th July: BORDADO PEPENADO
Think Frida Kahlo's blouses: pepenado is a traditional rural craft from the villages of pre-colonial Mexico. Deeply iconographic, pepenado echoes pre-colonial weaving patterns, with long lines of running stitches creating pagan symbols and shapes, flora and fauna.
Friday 24th July: DRAWN THREADWORK
Deceptively simple, elegant and surprisingly robust, this decorative technique was traditionally practiced on simply woven linen and hemp. Use it to add a touch of class to table linens or plain clothing.
