**So, what is Argentine Tango?**
Argentine tango is a form of partnered social dance and genre of music that is thought to have first formed in Argentine in the late 1800s as a dance of the working-class. Argentine tango is very different from American and International Ballroom tango, which evolved from Argentine Tango in the early 1900s. While there are fundamental frame, movement, and patterns, there is no true basic choreography - Argentine tango is improvisational. It is most often danced in a close embrace, though the embrace remains flexible and allows each dancer to move on their own axis.
Tango music is traditionally played by ensembles, or orquestas típicas, which often contains instruments such as double bass, guitar, bandoneon, violin, flute, clarinet, and piano. These orchestras may be instrumental or accompanied by vocalists.
Argentine Tango is danced to many musical rhythms; these rhythms influence how dancers move. Tango is both a dance and music genre. While Argentine Tango is commonly danced to Tango music (deliberate beat and dramatic movement, play with speed and pauses), it is also danced to Milonga (quick, energetic, “tripping” steps) and Vals, or waltz (fluid, circular movement, few pauses).
In addition to being a genre of music, Milonga is also the name for social gatherings where people go to dance Argentine tango.
