About this Event

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, observed annually on 6 February, is a global call to action, reinforcing the need for continued advocacy, professional education, and community partnership.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) remains one of the most severe violations of human rights, affecting over 230 million girls and women globally and resulting in lifelong physical, psychological, and social harm. The majority of cases are concentrated in Africa (144 million), followed by Asia (80 million) and the Middle East (6 million). An estimated 4 million girls are subjected to FGM every year, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated, international, and community-led efforts to eliminate this practice.

Southwark is one of the areas with the highest prevalence of FGM in the UK. Local estimates suggest that as many as 5,900 women are affected, with most cases reported among women and girls aged 15 and over. Recorded FGM cases in Southwark (2020–21) are more than twice the rate for London and five times the rate for England. This demonstrates a critical public health and safeguarding need within the borough and reinforces the importance of targeted educational and community focused intervention.

This conference has been organised by Unshackle Dumar, in collaboration with LSBU, Southwark Council, OCO Ltd, NSET and community organisations, strengthening existing partnerships and enabling meaningful engagement with local communities most affected by FGM. As a community-focused event, it aims to bring together academic experts, healthcare professionals, survivors, community leaders, and students to increase awareness, enhance culturally competent practice, and support collective action to end FGM.

Join us on for a day of insightful discussions and impactful conversations. Your presence is crucial in making a difference.
