“Finding Beauty in the Dark”
Inspiring Minds is thrilled to present Dr. Marie Berry, professor, prolific researcher, and writer on gender based violence in war, and womens’ remarkable resilience. Marie has spent two decades trying to understand how people, and women in particular, survive — and even thrive — after the horrors of war and genocide. She's interviewed hundreds of survivors of violence in Rwanda, Bosnia, Nepal, Colombia, Uganda, Kenya, Sri Lanka, and more, documenting stories of loss, grief, suffering, displacement, and pain. And yet in every context, these stories of suffering unfold alongside stories about people falling in love, caring for each other, creating art and music, cooking joyfully for their families, and generally resisting the dehumanizing facets of war. Berry's talk shares these stories about how people find beauty in bleak and impossible situations in order to ways help us re-center our politics and stop mass atrocities going forward.
