Discover how Quantum Lens uses mixed reality to explore the quantum world and discuss XR’s impact on science and creative practice.
About this Event

How can mixed reality technology enable deeper connections between humans and the unseen quantum world? What can this technology bring to the practice of science and the wider creative industries?

Meet the artists and researchers behind Quantum Lens, an immersive mixed reality artwork enabling people to explore the mysteries of the quantum world unfolding through a three chapter experience. Hear about how the work was made, how quantum ideas were woven into the work, and the interdisciplinary collaboration leading to a unique audience experience.

Discussion will explore the potential for XR within science, using Quantum Lens and other works as case studies into making intangible ideas into tangible experiences.

Free entry, booking essential.

Meet the speakers

Ulrike Kuchner is a practicing astrophysicist, artist, interdisciplinary researcher, and curator (Senior Research Fellow University of Nottingham). Ulrike enables and researches art–science collaborations with a focus on improving interdisciplinary practice. Quantum Lens is the artistic outcome of one of these collaborations, first shown during the touring exhibition Cosmic Titans: Art, Science and the Quantum Universe at Lakeside Arts Nottingham, which Ulrike co-curated.

Studio Above&Below is a London based art and technology practice founded by Royal College of Art graduates, Daria Jelonek and Perry-James Sugden. Through combining mixed realities experiences (XR), digital art and data, their work depicts the potential connections amid humans, machines and the environment. The award-winning duo’s work has been exhibited internationally at institutions such as The Tate Modern, V&A London and MEET Milan.

Sarah Martindale is Assistant Professor of Digital Innovation in the Creative Industries at the University of Nottingham. As creative director of the Virtual and Immersive Production (VIP) Studio, Sarah facilitates and evaluates interactions with artist partners and their audiences, trying to understand new forms of immersive storytelling and meaning-making, and feeding this knowledge back into creative practice. Sarah worked with Studio Above&Below on their residency which led to the creation of Quantum Lens.
