Discover Epictetus’s Stoic wisdom and how focusing on what you can control brings more calm, resilience, and inner freedom to everyday life
About this Event

This talk explores Epictetus’s Stoic philosophy of inner freedom, focusing on the faculty of choice (proairesis) and the distinction between what is and is not within our control. It highlights the Stoic practice of shifting attention from external events to the quality of our judgments and responses as a foundation for resilience and well-being.

It also considers how habitual thought patterns and emotional reactivity can obscure inner clarity, and how releasing resistance may restore greater balance. Parallels are drawn with other contemplative traditions that describe similar processes of psychological conditioning and release.

Overall, it presents Stoicism as a practical framework for living with greater composure, dignity, and inner freedom amid life’s uncertainties.

Louis Kinley is a yoga practitioner and student of Hellenistic philosophy at the University of Sydney. He holds a Bachelor of Science with majors in Philosophy and Mathematics. His academic and personal interests include spirituality, wisdom traditions, and Stoic philosophy. A central influence in his studies and practice is the teachings of Epictetus, particularly his emphasis on inner freedom and the discipline of the will, which continues to inform both his philosophical inquiry and way of life.
