De Brabandere Brewery was founded by Adolphe De Brabandere in 1894 as a farm brewery in the West Flanders region of Belgium. The early years saw the brewery selling mainly table beers to local clients and cafes, but by 1950, De Brabandere had built a much wider distribution due to the appeal of their flavorful beer. In the 1970’s, the brewery introduced the beer that would launch a brand and become its flagship, Petrus Oud Bruin, a sour ale aged in oak barrels. Today, its lineup includes Petrus Sours, Bavik Super Pils and Bavik Super Wit, among many others. Passed down from father to son over the years, a fifth generation still oversees Bavik’s daily operations, and the company remains one of the largest independent breweries in Belgium.
