Eine Kooperation der Berliner Cellistin Sophie Notte und des österreichischen Komponisten und Performancekünstlers Georg Nussbaumer. Ihr gemeinsames Projekt kreist um Entstehung und Zerfall von Harmonie: Fliegen und Haar, Echos vergangener Musik, winzige Kühe, ein Drache. Die Entwicklung von Ei – Raupe – Puppe – Schmetterling – Herde – Schwarm – und zurück zum Ei bildet ein wiederkehrendes Motiv.
Das Diptychon aus zwei kammermusikalischen Kompositionen basiert auf großer Musik des 19. Jahrhunderts, jedoch nicht als Arrangement: Die Originale werden eingeschmolzen, verfremdet und neu geformt, behalten aber ihre „Färbung“ und ihren „Geruch“. Das Cello bildet in beiden Stücken das zentrale klangliche Rückgrat; installative und räumliche Elemente erweitern die musikalischen Bögen. Ein offener alchemistischer Prozess – flüchtig, goldlos. Während der Aufführung werden Propolis und Pfingstrose verräuchert; Personen mit starker Rauchsensibilität wird der Besuch nicht empfohlen.
Sophie Notte (1991) ist Cellistin und Performerin. Sie studierte in Saarbrücken, Berlin und Rostock und ist seit 2020 Mitglied des Solistenensembles Kaleidoskop. Sie arbeitete mit Künstlern wie Achim Freyer, Georg Nussbaumer, Pol Pi, Wojciech Blecharz, François Sarhan und Stefan Streich. Auftritte u.a. bei Musiktheatertage Wien, MAERZ Musik, Donaufestival, Athens Epidaurus Festival sowie im Burgtheater Wien, Kampnagel, Berlinische Galerie, Auditorio de Tenerife und Centre Pompidou. Aktuell wirkt sie an einer dreiteiligen Performerinnen-Fassung von Schuberts „Winterreise“ (Regie Achim Freyer) sowie im zeitgenössischen Celloduo mit Mathis Mayr.
Georg Nussbaumer (1964) lebt in Wien. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Komposition, Installation, Performance und Theater. Großformatige szenische Bild-Klang-Räume stehen reduzierten Klanginstallationen und stillen Vorgängen gegenüber; stets geht es um Musik, ihre Geschichte, Wirkung und Erzeugung. Er arbeitet mit spezialisierten Musiker*innen ebenso wie mit Bogenschützen, Apnoetauchern, Motorradgruppen oder großen Laienchören.
Propolis
Propolis – das „Bienenkittharz“ – ist ein harziges, antimikrobielles Material aus Pflanzenharzen, Enzymen und Wachs. Als Räucherwerk entwickelt es ein tief harzig-balsamisches, warmes Aroma mit Noten von Holz, Honig, Vanille und einer leicht medizinischen Schärfe. Bereits ein erbsengroßes Stück genügt. Häufig wird es mit Weihrauch, Myrrhe, Zedernholz oder Zitrusschalen gemischt. Propolis gilt traditionell als reinigend, schützend und stärkend und wird seit der Antike sowohl rituell als auch therapeutisch verwendet.
Pfingstrose
Die Pfingstrose steht seit Jahrhunderten für Reichtum, Schutz, Heilung und Schönheit. Verräuchert werden meist Wurzelstücke oder Blüten. Ihr Duft ist blumig-würzig, warm, leicht süßlich mit erdiger Tiefe. Sie gilt als beruhigend, ausgleichend, schützend und wird in europäischen Traditionen zur Abwehr negativer Einflüsse und zur Förderung von Heilung und Selbstfürsorge eingesetzt. Häufig wird sie mit Rosenblättern oder Sandelholz kombiniert.

Incense: propolis, peony
A collaboration between Berlin-based cellist Sophie Notte and Austrian composer and performance artist Georg Nussbaumer. Their joint project revolves around the emergence and dissolution of harmony: flies and hair, echoes of vanished music, tiny cows, a dragon. The cycle from egg – caterpillar – pupa – butterfly – herd – swarm – and back to the egg appears as a recurring structural and poetic motif.
This diptych of two chamber works draws on major music of the 19th century, though not as arrangements: the originals are melted down, transformed, and reshaped anew while retaining their “color” and “scent.” The cello forms the central sonic backbone in both pieces; spatial and installative elements extend the musical arcs. The result is an open alchemical process—fleeting, goldless. Propolis and peony are burned during the performance; visitors with sensitivities to smoke are advised not to attend.
Sophie Notte (b. 1991) is a cellist and performer. She studied in Saarbrücken, Berlin, and Rostock and has been a member of Ensemble Kaleidoskop since 2020. She has collaborated with Achim Freyer, Georg Nussbaumer, Pol Pi, Wojciech Blecharz, François Sarhan, and Stefan Streich. Performances include Musiktheatertage Wien, MaerzMusik, Donaufestival, Athens Epidaurus Festival, as well as Burgtheater Wien, Kampnagel, Berlinische Galerie, Auditorio de Tenerife, and Centre Pompidou. Currently, she is involved in a three-part performer’s version of Schubert’s Winterreise (directed by Achim Freyer) and performs in a contemporary cello duo with Mathis Mayr.
Georg Nussbaumer (b. 1964) lives in Vienna. His work combines composition, installation, performance, and theater. Large-scale scenic image–sound environments stand alongside reduced sound installations and quiet processes; at the center is always music—its history, its effects, and its making. He collaborates with specialized musicians as well as with archers, freedivers, motorcycle groups, and large amateur choirs.
Propolis
Propolis—the “bee glue”—is a resinous, antimicrobial substance made from plant resins, enzymes, and wax. When burned, it produces a deep resinous-balsamic, warm aroma with notes of wood, honey, vanilla, and a lightly medicinal sharpness. A pea-sized piece is sufficient. It is often blended with frankincense, myrrh, cedarwood, or citrus peels. Traditionally considered cleansing, protective, and strengthening, it has been used ritually and therapeutically since antiquity.
Peony
The peony has symbolized wealth, protection, healing, and beauty for centuries. Burned as incense, typically using root pieces or blossoms, it develops a floral–spicy, warm, gently sweet fragrance with earthy depth. It is regarded as calming, balancing, and protective, used in European traditions to ward off negative influences and support healing and self-care. It can be combined with rose petals or sandalwood.
