About this Event
Description:
In the Name of Mental Health: Say Her Name, Rebuke the Stigma of Mental Illness, is in the memory of the late Sonya Massey and countless lives executed by fatal police violence and unjustified bodily harm. This course examines the stark reality of law-abiding citizen fatalities, police brutality, and systematic racism of African American women in crisis.
African American women are 1.4 times more likely to be killed by the police than Caucasian women. In the aftermath of these startling atrocities and racial iniquities, this course will further explore a mental health crisis and decision tree infographic, crisis intervention and emergency dispatch, and the do's and don'ts for mental health crisis and first responders.
Objectives:
After this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the disproportionate rate of police violence and unjustified bodily harm targeting African American women in crisis and the broader manifestation of personal implicit biases resulting from direct and systemic racism.
- Distinguish the historical timeline of policing, from the slave patrol era to the community policing era, and its modern-day implications for African American women's mental health.
- Identify the historical complexities and intergenerational trauma, of African American women's lives, resulting from fatal and non-fatal police encounters.
- Apply people-first language, culturally competent mental health language and rational thinking, and de-escalation and non-lethal crisis intervention techniques in everyday practice and train the trainer continuing education and professional development events for mental health professionals, first responders, emergency dispatch personnel, and law enforcement.
