About this Event
*** All Bodies, All Genders Welcome ***
Race, class, and sexual orientation are all qualities that determine how much power a man is likely to have. Manhood is inherently racialised and class bound and Black men are limited in the ways they can define themselves in relation to hegemonic masculine norms.
Some claim that Black men do not have equal access to the social, economic and political benefits of being a man, whilst others believe Black men still receive patriarchal dividends even if they are excluded from the dominant definitions of masculinity.
Do all men have access to the same privileges of "maleness" or can patriarchal power be limited?
Dominant discourse often constructs Black masculinity as inherently problematic and in need of “correction, repair, or rescue.” What is a good Black man? Is it one who distances himself from blackness? Which Black men merit inclusion into the mainstream? Is it only those who fit the assimilationist white ideal?
Join us as we explore identity, gender expression, and all the beauty and complexity of Black Manhood. Below are afew questions we will explore together;
· Are the majority of gender differences biologically determined or created by social constructs?
· Is heteronormativity a tool of social control?
· How can we disassociate both Blackness and manhood from capitalist registers of worth?
Our events are open to ALL BODIES. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, offer valuable insights, and allow for open respectful dialogue. Everyone is encouraged to contribute authentically without fear of judgment. We stand for the inherent worth of all people and aim to create a psychologically safe and inclusive space.
This is the culture we’re co-creating. If you resonate with this you’re in the right place;
· We tread gently, honour boundaries and see the humanity in everyone.
· We acknowledge ourselves and every person as sovereign while being rooted in a culture of care.
· We centre slowness and honour the pace of our bodies.
· We witness one another through the lens of love, even when challenges and fumbles arise.
· We give ourselves and one another grace. When mistakes happen we orient towards generous repair.
· We do our own internal work as our triggers arise.
· We honour different identities and are attentive to pronouns and don’t use generalisations when addressing individuals or a group.
There are very few spaces in this world where we get to be vulnerable, Unruly Beauty strives to create a culture of deep care and it’s important that the humanity of all is honoured. Here we get to be vulnerable, we let our guard down, we soften and we breathe.
Our events are spaces you can bring the totality of who you are, there’s no pretending, no code-switching, and each person's uniqueness is valued and respected. It’s about our narratives, our unique challenges, and the beauty and richness of our lived experiences.
We are an anti-capitalist organisation that believes in radical generosity. Our events are accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial circumstances. We offer a Sliding Scale Pricing option giving you the freedom and flexibility to choose a fair price that works for you. If you have limited economic agency, or no recourse to funds at all, please send us an email and we will provide you with a ticket no questions asked. We believe in helping people when they ask, without proof, without asking intrusive questions, and without judgement.
