About this Event
Spero Dance’s newest work, In Montage, is a mediation on filmmaker Sergio Eisenstein's concept of “montage.” His theory holds that a film's meaning emerges from the editing of different frames in sequence, versus what is seen in a single image. Montage, then, is emblematic of how context guides our perceptions of the environment, and how it is the relationship between individual and institution where meaning lies. How does institutional design affect understanding of space as guarded and owned? How does the governing of space guide interactions with each other and within these systems?
In Montage is a contemporary dance work performed by three dancers, engaging with one another as well as with evolving projections displayed around the room. The run time is between 20 and 30 minutes.
Spero Dance, co-founded by Camryn and Courtney Spero, is a project-based choreography cohort dissecting notions of performance through genre and musical experimentation. They have showcased their work at the Battery Dance Festival (2022), Young Choreographers’ Festival (2023), New Century Dance Project (2024, People’s Choice Winner), Dumbo Dance Festival (2025), Somerville ArtBeat Festival (2025), Mobius (2026), Movement Research (2026), and in the 41st annual MayFair festival in Cambridge, and were recently invited to the Creators in Dance Summit with BalletCollective.
