About this Event
Do you arrive at a location, take multiple shots but still don't get the results you want? Then this is the workshop for you.
One of the greatest skills that professional location photographers develop is the ability to assess a scene when they arrive at it. They are practiced at distilling a scene’s key elements into a beautiful or striking photograph, shaped from the much wider landscape a scene conveys. They do this by utilising a number of key skills:
- recognising and honing in on what interests them in the scene;
- knowing basic composition rules and guidelines;
- knowing how certain lenses will affect the look of the scene, and;
- how to ‘re-shape’ lighting using their camera settings.
By using these skills they can ‘shape’ an extraordinary image from the ordinary. It is composing an image as opposed to recording it. Better yet, it isn’t any of the things you may have been told: a ‘good eye’, the preserve of the ‘gifted’ or an innate artistic ‘sensibility’. It is a skill and like any skill, it can be taught.
This 1-day workshop has been specifically designed to help you begin to develop those skills.
We will visit Rottingdean, a picturesque town on the South Coast. It has many small, pretty but not overly striking areas. These are just the type of locations that are difficult to represent successfully without developing the skills mentioned above. It is also home to some very dramatic coastal scenes that many people find difficult to convey successfully in their photos.
I’ll show you how to get the best from both these types of location, teaching you what to do when first arriving at a location you wish to photograph, then ‘building’ the key elements of the photograph in your mind before even using your camera.
