About this Event

About the Exhibition — Imported Goods

Imported Goods is an ongoing project consisting of black-and-white photographs of embellished tropical fruits that bear cultural and economic significance for Taiwanese people. As food is a crucial part of the nation's cultural identity, this series explores how the localization of these products — which mostly originated on other continents — became symbols that represent us, mirroring the migration journeys of many in the Western diaspora, marked by their resilience and adaptability.

All works are available for purchase, including prints, and photography postcards by Yu-Sheng Chiu.

As part of the Contact Photography Festival's 30th Anniversary Open Call.

On view May 7 to 31 at Loohoo. Curated by Lindsay Duong.

About Yu-Sheng Chiu

Yu-Sheng Chiu (b.1999) is an Ottawa-based photographic artist born and raised in Chiayi City, Taiwan. Her work explores how solitude, oral history, and the ever-changing definition of femininity have constructed her experience as a Taiwanese woman in geopolitical and psychological contexts.

Yu-Sheng's work has been exhibited widely across North America including at the Ottawa Art Gallery, Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, Wall Space Gallery, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center, among others. Her photographs have appeared in CBC Arts and The VSCO 100. She is represented by Wall Space Gallery, Canada, and expects to receive her Bachelor of Fine Arts from University of Ottawa in 2026.
