Workshop with the Sound Museum Collective where teens can explore the topic of rest through sound and create and record a soundscape.
About this Event

Supine Horizons is an immersive exhibition for rest, resistance and renewal. Inspired by the synthesized sound of local multimedia artist, Gralin Hughes, Jr. aka Television Sky, this workshop invites teens across Philadelphia to explore the topic of rest through sound and create and record a soundscape together. This 2 hour workshop is led by artists and educators Elissa Andrsn and Jackie Milestone of the Sound Museum Collective. All are welcome to register; there is no prior experience required for this workshop.

This workshop is part of Philadelphia Contemporary's immersive installation, Supine Horizons. Experience the installation in-person November 1 through December 20, 2022 at The KDD Theatre by booking your free rest session in advance.

About Supine Horizons

Supine Horizons is an immersive site for rest, resistance and renewal, featuring synthesized sound and projected visuals by local multimedia artist Gralin Hughes, Jr. (Television Sky).

Supine Horizons seeks to dismantle the idea that rest is solely a luxury or a privilege and aims to subvert capitalist ideals of “hustle” and “grind” culture, to instead center rest as the ultimate form of self-care and collective healing, particularly for the Black community.

Supine Horizons is generously supported by The Barra Foundation.

About Philadelphia Contemporary

Founded in 2016, Philadelphia Contemporary is a contemporary art organization whose mission is to connect the people and places of Philadelphia through art and partnership. Currently nomadic, Philadelphia Contemporary presents visual art, performance art, and spoken word across the city, with ambitions to establish a freestanding, globally oriented, and locally aware non-collecting arts institution.

About the Sound Museum Collective:

The Sound Museum Collective (SMC) of Philadelphia is an evolving nonmember collective that holds space to reconstruct our relationships to sounds. Through accessible workshops and skill shares, creative team projects and community partnerships, SMC celebrates trans, nonbinary and women sound artists and technicians. We demystify audio engineering and share in the resounding nature of sound.
