Registration is now open!
A backyard ultra is a type of endurance running race with a very simple but brutal format: runners must complete a set loop (usually 4.167 miles / 6.7 km) every hour, and they keep doing laps until only one runner is left capable of finishing the next loop. If more than one runner completes the same number of loops and then no one finishes the next one, the race has no winner.
In other words:
โ€ข ๐Ÿ• At the start of each hour, runners set out on the loop.
โ€ข ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ They must finish before the hour is up.
โ€ข ๐Ÿ“ If they finish early, they can rest until the next hour begins.
โ€ข ๐Ÿšซ Once a runner fails to complete a loop within the hour, theyโ€™re out.
โ€ข ๐Ÿ† The race continues until only one runner completes a loop that no one else can.
This format means the total race distance and duration are unknown beforehand โ€” it lasts until all but one runner drop out. The name โ€œbackyard ultraโ€ comes from the idea that itโ€™s informal and could be run โ€œin a backyard,โ€ and it was popularized by endurance runner and race director Lazarus Lake (Billy Wilson).
Itโ€™s a test of strategy, durability, and mental toughness as much as speed โ€” runners pace themselves carefully and deal with cumulative fatigue over potentially hundreds of miles and hours.
