About this Event
Iftaar for Beginners is a hands-on cooking and dining experience designed for anyone curious about Ramadan and the food traditionally served when breaking the fast.
Iftaar is the evening meal eaten at sunset during Ramadan. It is usually made up of a table full of small savoury and sweet dishes that are shared before moving on to a main meal. This event focuses on those festive foods and how they come together.
During the class, you will prepare and taste a range of traditional South Asian Iftaar items, including:
- Piyaju (lentil and onion fritters)
- Beguni (battered aubergine fritters)
- Spiced chickpeas with puffed rice
- Jhaal muri (spiced puffed rice mix)
- Dates
- Khichuri (lentils and rice)
- Jilapi (crispy syrup soaked sweet)
- Rose and winter-spiced drinks
Some items will be cooked together during the class, while others will be pre-prepared so you can see how a full Iftaar table is normally laid out and served.
This is a relaxed, social cooking class where you will learn how these dishes are made, how they are eaten, and what role they play during Ramadan. Once the cooking is finished, everyone will sit down together to share the Iftaar meal.
No previous cooking experience or knowledge of Ramadan is needed. This event is open to everyone who wants to learn, cook, and eat together in a friendly and informal setting.
