About Koyunbaba
Originally composed by Carlo Domeniconi in 1985, Koyunbaba is a modern guitar classic inspired by Turkish landscapes, mysticism, and the resonance of modal harmony. The name itself refers to a legendary 13th-century saint known as the “shepherd father,” whose presence is said to still inhabit a remote bay on the Aegean coast.
In this performance, Identidades reinterprets Koyunbaba through a flamenco lens, performing movements I, III, and IV. The first movement remains close to its original meditative spirit, performed with guitar and dance in a free, timeless flow. The third and fourth movements bring the piece into the rhythmic world of tientos–tangos and zapateado, fusing Domeniconi’s modal landscapes with flamenco compás and energy.
Dancer Noemí Luz bridges flamenco and contemporary dance, weaving movement that reflects both the rootedness and transcendence of the music. Together, the artists create a performance that moves between stillness and rhythm, contemplation and celebration — an exploration of identity, transformation, and dialogue across traditions.
