Think you’ve seen director Albert Pyun’s Captain America? Think again! The producers famously butchered the film, but promised they’d release Pyun’s more complex version at a later date. They did not. And though a frustrated Pyun did later lend his name to a so-called Director’s Cut, it turned out to be the studio’s bastardized version with a bit of extra footage tossed at it. Though Pyun did not live to see his original vision released, his wife rescued his workprint and has made it available to fans for the very first time. And what a different film it is! Is it a great one? Not quite. But it’s a hell of a lot better than what the studio released. That said, this IS a 36-year-old workprint, meaning that it has pops, cracks, and worn-out shoe leather. And yes, the Nazi villain is still inexplicably Italian. Still, you don’t want to miss this. It will give you a whole new appreciation for the Albert Pyun Pyuniverse. Rated PG. 113 minutes.
