18.30 = CINEMA CAFÉ OPENS19.30 = DEVILS ISLAND (1996) aka “Djöflaeyjan,” directed by Friðrik Þór Friðriksson, 1996, 99 minutes
Reykjavik in the years following World War II: the British and American occupation army has left their bunkers behind which have become homes to hundreds of lower-class people who were pouring into the capital during those years. “Devil’s Island” tells the (often humorous) story of families struggling to make a life in the bunkers in those difficult times. … a 'gritty' film, about a lower class family in the 1950’s going through major cultural shock. (film screened with English subtitles)
