About this Event
TPL presents National Book Award winning author Dr. Ibram X. Kendi at the Toronto Reference Library's Appel Salon.
At the heart of our authoritarian age lies "great replacement theory", the claim that shadowy elites are orchestrating the demographic and cultural displacement of white majorities through immigration, diversity initiatives, and declining birth rates. In his urgent new book Chain of Ideas: The Origins of Our Authoritarian Age, internationally bestselling historian Ibram X. Kendi traces how this conspiracy theory has mutated and spread across continents, repackaging age-old prejudices in the language of a digital age.
What made this fringe idea go mainstream? Kendi reveals how replacement theory connects to the deep roots of slavery, segregation, colonialism, and Nazism. But this isn't a book about extremists on the margins. It's about how reactionary ideas have been repackaged as common sense, how they've crossed borders and inspired terror, and how they now political movements worldwide.
How do we recognize the warning signs when conspiracy becomes policy? What does it mean when the fringe becomes the centre? And how do we challenge ideas that offer simple answers to complex anxieties?
