For September our "page-to-screen" book club, I Read That Movie @ the Library, is reading the 2012 YA novel Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, the debut novel by author and screenwriter Jesse Andrews. Set in leafy Pittsburgh, PA, the book's main character, Greg (the Me in the title) is a high school senior who is socially connected with nearly everyone in his world, but truly close to no one other than his childhood buddy Earl, with whom he makes amateurish home movies. At his mother's insistence, Greg (and by extension Earl) rekindles a friendship with Rachel (the Dying Girl), a classmate from Hebrew school recently diagnosed with leukemia, radically transforming his senior year. Look for a copy of the book at the Humanities Desk on the 2nd Floor of the Central Library, as well as other locations in the MPL system. Participants are invited to read the the book during September, then come for a screening of the charming 2015 film that made a rousing premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, winning the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. drama category.
The screening (including popcorn, drinks, and other snacks!) will take place on September 28 at 2:00 p.m. in Room L-56 at the Central Library, followed by a discussion about the book and the movie.
Even if you don't have the opportunity to read the book, you are welcome to join us to watch the movie and participate in the conversation!
I Read That Movie @ the Library is made possible through funding provided by the Friends of the Library.
