About this Event
From the creator of the beloved Instagram @LondonSuburbia comes a heart warming full-colour celebration of London’s suburbs in all their underappreciated beauty.
Join us with Simon Pollock in conversation with Luke Agbaimoni (aka @tubemapper), talking about Simon's debut book I Love Suburbia. Explore with us the hidden gems of the suburbs through this collection of fabulous photos and stories.
How many of us have marvelled at the unexpected beauty of an art deco cinema, had our heads turned by the magnificent Hoover Factory on the A40, or wondered at a mosaic-covered house in Chiswick?
From stations that wouldn't be out of place in Miami Beach to cinemas converted to mega churches, I Love Suburbia brings to life the joys of living outside Zone 1. Step back in time and revisit simpler days in the suburbs to discover the pioneering interwar architects who brought modernism to Britain, or delight in the elegance of Art Deco buildings given a new lease of life.
Filled with stories of the people who live, work and play in the outskirts of London, this full-colour book is an exploration of the capital’s overlooked everyday treasures.
With over 200 original photos of unusual charm from Chingford to Leatherhead, Beaconsfield to Becontree, this is the suburbs as you've never seen them before.
'Brilliant. London never looked so good. A glorious celebration of the city that will leave a big smile on your face.’ Daisy May Cooper
About the speakers:
SIMON POLLOCK was born and raised in the suburbs of London. He started the Instagram account @LondonSuburbia in 2022. It began as a hobby and grew into a way to tell the overlooked stories of the people and buildings that make up 95% of the city. In his spare time, he enjoys exploring exotic locations like Pinner, Chigwell, Bromley and Dagenham and has discovered that amongst the rows of 1930s semi-detached houses, there are architectural marvels to rival South Beach in Miami.
This is his first book.
LUKE AGBAIMONI (aka @tubemapper) has an arts background with a degree in Graphic Design. He started his career as a web designer inLondon's Docklands, where he began taking photos. In 2010 he entered and won a photography competition run by TFL, the first prize being what would become his first serious camera, and soon embarked upon an ambitious project to capture moments at every station and stop on the London Underground Tube Map.
His work has been featured on BBC news live, the radio and in printed press. He has two published books (London Underground Symmetry and Imperfections: The Tube Mapper Project and The Tube Mapper Project: Capturing Moments on the London Underground), with his third, Contrast – Photography on the London Underground: The Tube Mapper Project, coming out at the end of Nov 2024.
