An in-person, practical, compliance-focused HR training programme designed for small businesses and people leaders who need clear, usable guidance on day-to-day HR fundamentals. This session is built to strengthen legal compliance, reduce risk, and improve confidence in handling difficult conversations with employees. By the end of the session, participants will be able to understand key employment relationship fundamentals and common compliance risks through better understanding of:
· Employment types: permanent, fixed-term, casual, part-time/full-time
· Contractor vs employee considerations (high-level risk awareness)
· Employment agreement essentials and contractual requirements
· What documentation supports compliance and reduces risk
· When a trial period can be used (and when it can’t) and how to apply it correctly
· Probation periods: when they are appropriate and how to structure support
· Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
· Performance management
· Informal management: what it is, what it looks like, and how to document safely
· Formal management: how it differs and when it is required
· Setting expectations, identifying patterns, and using evidence properly
· Preparing for performance conversations (structure, timing, and messaging)
· Disputes and discipline – keeping yourself safe
· Performance vs misconduct: knowing the difference
· Fair process essentials, investigations (high-level), and meeting basics
· Reducing risk through documentation and consistent steps
· Handling conflict, emotion, and escalation
The workshop will conclude with a confidential Q&A and scenario clinic - a structured open session allowing participants to raise questions and workshop scenarios in confidence in a way that protects privacy (no identifying details)
Attendees will receive a practical workbook that supports learning during the session that becomes a reusable workplace tool.
