***This first class in the 3-part series is 60 minutes long and informational rather than workshop-based. As such, it is a shorter class running from noon to 1pm., followed by 30 minutes of optional social time.***
This comprehensive three-part workshop is designed to inform and guide aspiring musicians on how to release their music to the world. Part one will equip you with the essential knowledge needed to properly release your music, including copyright registration, documenting collaborator splits, royalty collection, and distribution platforms. In part two, you'll put your newfound knowledge into action by registering your work, setting up for royalty collection, and distributing your music to the public, all with hands-on guidance to ensure you successfully complete the process. In part three, you will learn how to market your music and find fans. By the end of this three-part series, you'll have a clear understanding of the music release process and your first release will be set up and ready to arrive into the world!
Part 2: Release Your Music - Sat 11/9
Description:
Building on the knowledge gained in Part 1, this hands-on workshop will guide you through the process of releasing your music. You'll register with the collection societies (a PRO, The MLC, SoundExchange), sign up with a distributor, set up the digital release and order physical copies if desired, and learn next steps for promoting your music. With step-by-step guidance and assistance, you’ll leave this workshop as an independent artist with soon-to-be-released music!
What You’ll Do:
- Register with a PRO, The MLC, and SoundExchange, as well as decide if you wish to register with the US Copyright Office (not required; you are a copyright holder as soon as the work is written down or recorded aka “fixed in a tangible medium”)
- Create an account with your distribution platform and upload all of your artist assets (bio, photos, contact info)
- Set up the release, which will include uploading your master recordings, lyrics, credits, titles, album covers, metadata, etc and setting a release date
- If desired, order physical copies (Note: This is an example of a need that is important to decide prior to choosing a distributor, as some distributors only support digital releases!)
- Learn about next steps for promoting your release and building an audience
