For the Monday 18 August 2025 presentation, we will hear from historical archaeologist and renown oral historian Christeen Schoepf presenting 'Stories from the HMSBuffalo'In 1840, HMS Buffalo, the ‘Mayflower’ of South Australia, went aground in Mercury Bay New Zealand after a violent storm. Five decades later, pieces of the ship were crafted into the Mayoral Chair of Glenelg as locals sought material connections to their history. More recently, other objects have been created from timber remnants of HMS Buffalo that have washed ashore and will form part of a broader project that seeks to explore the biographies of objects made from wrecked ships.
This presentation will reveal just some of Christeen's latest research journey.
